Last year, BMW unveiled the Concept XM, a crazy plug-in hybrid SUV that previewed the brand’s first M-only model since the M1 supercar in 1978. The front end is dominated by two huge kidney grilles, the contours of which are accentuated. Combined with prominent ridges on the hood, ultra-slim LED headlights and dark lights “hidden” in the bumper below, the XM looks like an angry cartoon pig. The fenders are nicely sculpted and feature large black wheel arches that flow into the sleek bodywork, and the XM has a high beltline and wide sidewalls. Slim taillights, like the concept, wrap around the rear fenders, with the light itself visible only in the lens cap when illuminated, and there’s a set of stacked hexagonal tailpipes at each end of the rear fender. Most importantly, the XM retains the concept’s prominent rear glass, which mirrors the shape of the M1’s rear end and features two laser-enhanced BMW circles on the glass. As in the concept, there is a trim piece that wraps around the window and continues at the waistline, which is usually gloss black but is available in NightGold. This beautiful gold trim can also be added to the outline of the kidney grilles and diffuser pieces. Seven paint colors will be available at launch, and more will be added in the summer – eventually more than 50 BMW Individual shades will be available. The XM comes standard with 23-inch wheels with summer performance tires, but 22s with aerodynamic accessories are optional. BMW also offers the two-tone 23-inch wheel design you see here, which features a center cap with BMW’s 3D script.
Unfortunately, the XM’s interior omits the three vertical vents and the console knob, but it sets itself apart from the X7 with a unique dashboard design and some interesting details. The large curved iDrive screen is set in a matte carbon fiber cover, and there’s more pearl-effect chrome trim. The XM has what BMW calls M Lounge rear seats; The three-way seat features reclining cushions, integrated headrests and folded leather panels that extend into the doors. The XM is also available with Vintage Coffee Merino leather on the dashboard and doors, along with Silverstone or Deep Lagoon base colors. This leather is created with a unique finishing process that highlights imperfections that are often overlooked in conventional leather spaces and is slightly different for each car. But the real entertainment part of the XM is the headliner, which has a 3D sculpture on its Alcantara surface, enhanced by optical cables with 100 LEDs around the edge of the roof panel.
The starting point for the XM’s powertrain is an updated version of the BMW twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 we know and love, producing just 483 horsepower. But the XM is also equipped with a 29.5 kWh battery (of which 25.7 kWh is usable) and a 194 hp electric motor mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The total power is 644 horsepower and a torque of 590 kgm, and B.M. Wu says the XM will reach 60 km/h in 4.1 seconds and reach a top speed of 268 km/h. In pure electric mode, the XM can travel approximately 30 miles on a single charge, reach speeds of up to 87 km/h, and with 7.4kW AC charging, the battery can be charged from 0 to 100% in less than 3.5 hours.
