They evaluated 107 cars based on factors including the car’s overall score and US News’ Best Car rating, starting price, 2 rating, and fuel economy with data from the Environmental Protection Agency.
Most cars won their respective categories for the second year in a row. The Lexus ES Hybrid, Kia EV6, Hyundai Tucson Plug-In Hybrid, Toyota Prius and Lucid Air each earned their second straight wins in the award category. The best hybrid car can be the right choice for drivers who want to save money on gas, but don’t want to take the plunge with a battery-powered electric car.
The 12 Best Plug In Hybrid Cars That Save You The Most On Gas
The demand for hybrid cars is increasing rapidly, with many car manufacturers offering hybrid engine options besides petrol and diesel.
There are a number of options available – useful if you want to avoid the original model (or indeed the Uber driver definition) pioneered by the Toyota Prius. From the compact Honda Jazz to bold and sporty hybrids like the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid, there is now a light model for every taste.
However, not all species are created equal. We’ve tested models with disappointing reliability, high emissions, and several models that don’t deliver the promised fuel economy when you take them on the highway.
Get the hard-hitting verdict on every car we’ve tested, across all fuel types, with our own personal car reviews.
Top 10 Best Hybrid Estate Cars 2023
A hybrid car combines an old engine (usually petrol, but diesel hybrids are also available) and an electric motor. Depending on the hybrid model, the electric motor works together with the petrol engine, or on its own for a while, with the aim of saving fuel and reducing emissions.
Below are the best hybrids we’ve tested, including the best SUVs, the best budget hybrids and the best plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). These are all great cars. Not only do they pass the same tests as gasoline and diesel, but they can also save a lot of money on fuel costs.

There are three main types of hybrid cars. What is best for you will depend on how you use it and – most importantly – whether you can install a charging point at home to charge the batteries that make up the hybrid electric machine.
A full hybrid, also known as a ‘self-charging’ hybrid, is a petrol car (and to a lesser extent) with a different battery to the standard 12V car battery. These batteries are transferred using the energy obtained from braking or acceleration, and use it to drive a small electric motor.
The electric motor can drive the car together with the gasoline/diesel engine, or even alone (although usually only for short distances and high speeds).

The electric motor is especially useful if the car does not work well under gasoline or diesel fuel, such as transportation, and can reduce fuel consumption when driving in the city termination. Some hybrids will charge the battery directly from gasoline/diesel under certain conditions.
Some new full hybrid models use the petrol engine to power the battery only, and then use it to drive the wheels, as some manufacturers consider this to be more efficient. In some cases – such as the Honda Civic e: HEV – the petrol engine can drive the car, for example when it is necessary to accelerate quickly.
Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) – pioneered in the UK by models such as the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV – have larger batteries than full hybrids and have a longer electric range – usually around 20 to 40 kilometres. However, to get anywhere near the fuel economy advertised for most models, you’ll want to plug it in to charge the battery as much as possible.
Many PHEV models can also use a battery charger, but this is not ideal. When the battery is depleted, the PHEV functions as a full hybrid.
Best Hybrid Vehicles For 2023
Our research reveals that, compared to fully electric vehicles, PHEVs use more electricity due to their lighter weight and smaller electric motors. If you can keep your car at home all the time, you may want to switch immediately to an electric car.
The length of time it takes to charge a plug-in hybrid battery will depend on the size of the battery and the speed of the electric charger. If you are paying at home, it may take several hours. At a fast checkout it can take less than an hour.
The main difference between a full hybrid and a plug-in hybrid is that a mild hybrid cannot be powered by electricity alone. The battery is only there to help the combustion engine, not take over. This limits their ability to have low CO2 emissions and fuel consumption.
Some give more power when they are faster; others leave the engine on when braking or accelerating to save fuel. A mild hybrid battery can also be used with the car’s 12V battery to power non-engine systems, such as the car’s air conditioning.

You probably won’t notice a big difference between driving a mild hybrid and a regular gas or diesel car. The exception is that, while modern cars shut down the engine when it stops to reduce fuel consumption and pollution, in some mild hybrids, the engine shuts down when moving or slowing down.
So if you break for a traffic light, for example, at low speed, the engine will stop while you’re still moving, and it won’t start again until you let go of the brake and it needs to be. fast. It can be a little awkward at first, going to a complete stop without the engine running, but you get the hang of it quickly.
Hybrid cars run on gas and electricity, so in theory they should reduce the amount of gas you use while driving. This means that the car will emit less CO2.
However, it really depends on how you use your hybrid car. If you use your car mainly for short trips, where you can only run it on the battery, then your hybrid can be more environmentally friendly than a normal car. But it is important to remember that it will still generate air in the same way as a car whenever it is not running on batteries. Our road tests and labs reveal actual fuel consumption figures for every car we’ve tested, in a variety of driving conditions.
Electric Suvs On The Horizon
There is no clear answer to this, because it depends on your own situation. There is no denying that electric cars are good for the environment in terms of emissions, because they do nothing. But they aren’t right for everyone – or at least they aren’t.
Whether you drive an electric car or a plug-in hybrid, the public charging network can be confusing, thanks to the different networks, connection types and power levels available. Find out in our guide on how to pay for an electric car, which also covers charging at home.

Since they run on gasoline or diesel (at least in time), hybrid cars can’t take on powerlessness in the same way that fully electric cars can. This may apply when driving in clean air zones or other restricted areas in busy cities.
