Below you’ll find three lists of the most fuel-efficient gas-powered cars, ranked by the EPA and broken down by type: gas-only, gas-electric hybrids, and plug-in hybrids. Please note that these ratings are EPA estimates and your actual mileage may vary based on a variety of factors, some of which are within your control.
Best Fuel Efficient Cars Non Hybrid
The 2022 Mirage is not only the most fuel-efficient car on the market, but also one of the cheapest. Front-wheel-drive is only available on the Mirage hatchback and Mirage G4 sedan equipped with a 1.2-liter, 78-horsepower three-cylinder engine. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, and a continuously variable automatic is optional. The most fuel-efficient Mirage is a hatchback with a CVT, rated at 36/43/39 mpg city/highway/combined. With the CVT, the Mirage G4 sedan is rated at 35/41/37 mpg, and with the manual transmission, fuel economy is rated at 33/41/36 and 33/40/35 mpg for the hatch and sedan, respectively.

The 2022 Hyundai Elantra offers buyers a choice of engines and transmissions, all with front-wheel drive. The base engine in the Civic is a 158-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder. In sedans, it’s good for top ratings of 31/40/35 mpg in the LX and 30/37/33 mpg in the Sport. The C has only a six-speed manual and a 200-horsepower, 1.5-liter turbo four-cylinder; Rated at 27/37/31 mpg on premium gas.
The hatchback gets the same engine and transmission options. With the 1.5-liter turbo and CVT, its top mpg ratings are 31/39/35. The base engine and CVT are rated at 30/38/33 mpg. Step up to the six-speed manual and top figures are 28/37/31 mpg with the 1.5-liter turbo and 26/36/29 mpg with the 2.0-liter.
What Are The Disadvantages Of A Hybrid Car?
Two South Korean subsidiaries are part of the fourth point – and architecture and trains. Both come standard with a 120-hp engine, a 1.6-liter four-cylinder, and a CVT. Each sedan is rated at 33/41/36 mpg.

Power for the Prius comes from a 1.8-liter four-cylinder gas engine with two electric motors and a 121-horsepower battery. The previous Eco model gets 58/53/56 mpg. Other FWD trims are rated at 54/50/52 mpg, and opting for all-wheel drive (and a second electric motor) drops efficiency to 51/47/49 mpg.
Plug In Hybrid Cars Burn More Fuel Than Tests Record, Says Which?
The Elantra makes another appearance here as a hybrid, combining a 1.6-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine, electric motor, and battery for a total system output of 139 horsepower, the same as the Ioniq. The only export option is a six-speed dual-clutch automatic. The blue version is the most efficient at 53/56/54 mpg; Most well-equipped models are rated at 49/52/50 mpg.
Next on the list is Honda’s Insight Hybrid, which combines a 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with two electric motors and a battery pack for a total system output of 151 horsepower. The Insight is available in EX or Touring trims, with the lower EX at 55/49/52 mpg and the Touring at 51/45/48 mpg.
Similar to the Prius hybrid but with a conventional body, the Corolla hybrid sedan comes in just one trim, the LE, and is rated at 53/52/52 mpg.
The Prius plug-in hybrid uses a larger battery, 8.8kWh, but has the same 1.8-litre petrol engine and a total output of 121bhp. The EPA rates the Prius Prime at 133 mpg-e for electric and gas, and 54 mpg in hybrid mode when the battery is fully charged. It has an all-electric range of about 25 miles and 640 miles.
Fast Good Mpg Cars
Second in this segment is the PHEV version of the Ioniq. Like the Prius Prime, the Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid has the same system output as the Ioniq Hybrid, but with a larger, 8.9 kWh battery pack. The Ioniq PHEV has an EPA-estimated electric range of 29 miles and a combined range of 620 miles, with ratings of 119 mpg-e and 52 mpg.
The Niro PHEV shares a lot with the related Ioniq PHEV – it combines a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor and an 8.9 kWh battery. Total range is less, about 560 miles, with about 26 all-electric miles. Efficiency is even lower: the EPA rates the Niro PHEV at 105 mpg-e and 46 mpg combined.
Ford’s Escape PHEV compact SUV is on this list with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and a CVT that uses electric power from a 14.4 kWh battery. The Escape PHEV is FWD only, with an all-electric range of approximately 37 miles and a total range of approximately 520 miles. Although it ties the Niro at 105 mpg-e, it’s fourth because after the initial charge, the Escape PHEV is rated at just 40 mpg.
Simply mirror the Prius transmission by combining a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with two electric motors and an 18.1 kWh battery. Total system output is 302 horsepower, and the RAV4 Prime comes standard with AWD (thanks to the third engine in the rear). The longest estimated all-electric range of any PHEV on this list is 42 miles, for a total range of nearly 600 miles. It’s rated at 94 mpg-e, with a combined mpg rating of 38 in combined mode.
