Best Hybrid Car Gas Mileage – You may want better gas mileage without switching to diesel fuel or taking the next step to plug-in vehicles.
The good news is that almost all fuel-efficient cars sold now are hybrids, with the exception of plug-ins. Whether you’re after a roomy subcompact or a sleek sedan, there’s a hybrid to fit most needs.

Below are our ten most efficient, ranked by EPA combined mileage. Click on each vehicle’s title to go to its review page or use this as a handy guide to hybrids with the best gas mileage.
Best Gas Mileage Cars For 2022
Not surprisingly, the Prius C is tops for gas mileage. With a smaller, lighter body and a smaller engine than the regular Prius, it outperforms the larger car through improved city mileage. Although its less aerodynamic body lends itself to a car that’s less refined and less efficient on the highway, it’s more fun to drive.
The Prius is no longer the most advanced hybrid, but the formula was right from the start – as evidenced by the combined EPA figures. It took a smaller version of the Prius line – or plug-in cars – to beat it on economy. If you can live with the look, go deeper into the picture, it’s still worth watching.
Toyota may be at the top of the gas mileage charts, but Ford is catching up fast. The C-Max Hybrid has better EPA gas mileage and costs less than its closest competitor, the Prius Wagon. It is also a great car to drive. Only lingering doubts about his real world economy can dissuade you.
Ford is having its best few months for hybrid sales, and the Fusion Hybrid could get some glory. Despite concerns that Ford hybrids don’t come close to their EPA gas mileage numbers, the Fusion looks good on paper and drives well on the road. It also looks great parked in your driveway.
The Most Fuel Efficient Cars From 1975 To Today
Think the Ford Fusion Hybrid below, with a classic, more dramatic exterior. The MKZ Hybrid loses some mpg to its Fusion cousin, but you get more luxury and a more prestigious name as consolation. And if you had said five years ago that Lincoln was one of the most efficient cars on sale, people would have thought you were crazy…
“VW” and “gas mileage” in the same sentence used to be reserved for diesels – but not anymore. The Jetta Hybrid pulls the rug out from under its TDI sibling, with 45 mpg combined economy and an impressive 48 highway. VW boasts how it even carries the tag line “Sure it’s a hybrid. But it’s a turbo hybrid” in its advertising. The 1.4 turbocharged engine definitely delivers good performance.
Note: The 2013 Honda Civic Hybrid is rated at 44 mpg combined, so it logically belongs on the list here. We removed it from this article because fuel efficiency ratings were not listed on the EPA website when the piece was published.
Prius fans who want a bit more practicality will have to give up some mpg to get there, but the Prius V still makes a practical, useful family car. 40 mpg on the highway is not to be missed.
Best Plug In Hybrid (phev) Cars 2022
Under the skin, the CT 200h is no different from the Prius. Sharper bodywork and a few tweaks mean it’s not as efficient, but it’s sportier than the Prius, and the Lexus badge on the front makes a lot of sense, too. The difference in the real world economy is not as large as the EPA figures suggest.
Compare the 2013 Insight to its early 2000 predecessors and it looks like it’s lost a lot of its mojo – it’s heavier, less efficient and less fun. It is the most practical and cheapest hybrid car on sale. While it’s not as comfortable—or as fuel-efficient—it’s better than the Prius. A redesign in 2012 slightly updated the look.
Another Toyota is on the list. The Camry Hybrid was recently updated, but official EPA figures show it slightly ahead of the Fusion Hybrid. It’s cheaper though, so you get a few more miles of fuel with the difference.
