The 12 Best Plug In Hybrid Cars That Save You The Most On Gas
Due to political and environmental pressures, electric cars are becoming more common on our roads. Mild, standard and plug-in hybrids are best viewed by many drivers as a ‘best of both worlds’ approach to environmentally friendly driving. As this technology expands to more and more models, the selection is wider than ever, with amazing hybrid cars from superminis to family SUVs.
The appeal is not hard to see. Conventional hybrid technology can improve the fuel efficiency of a wide range of cars, meaning real financial savings are to be made. Hybrids make a lot of sense for low mileage or urban private customers and fleet users looking to reduce company car tax bills. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) must be regularly plugged in to deliver their best performance, but they can offer a pure electric range of 30 miles or more.
Mild hybrid vehicles will appeal to those who don’t need to worry about charging because they include a small electric motor that only serves to assist the engine and does not operate independently. Mild hybrids tend to be the cheapest way to own a hybrid, but there is no pure electric drive.
As manufacturers find a balance between performance and efficiency, hybrids of all types play an important role in bridging the gap between internal combustion and electric cars.
Best Hybrid Suvs For 2023
The latest Toyota Yaris is one of the most sensible superminis on the market, and it’s hard to fault its combination of capabilities. The only engine available in the regular car is a 114bhp 1.5-litre petrol with Toyota’s tried and tested petrol-electric hybrid technology. This setup will be nicer around town, but will hold its own on the highway too. It’s smart and makes sense – just like the car itself .
Not only is the Yaris stylish on the outside, the base model is also generously equipped with 16-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights and wipers, adaptive cruise control, air conditioning, a reverse camera and multipurpose leather. Decorated steering wheel as standard.
The latest Honda Civic looks distinct and modest compared to its predecessor, but hides an impressive feel and good engineering under the skin. For the 11th generation of its Volkswagen Golf rival, Honda has limited the Civic to a single engine choice, and the 2.0-liter four-cylinder hybrid setup is a bit unconventional.
The gasoline engine is used as a generator to run a battery that drives an electric motor, but it can also drive the wheels directly at high speed. The result is a quiet and calm power delivery that rarely emphasizes the combustion engine, while delivering respectable performance and a promise of 60.1 mpg. With a spacious cabin, high quality and sharp dynamics, the Civic has never been more powerful.
What Is A Mild Hybrid?
Available in hybrid, PHEV and pure electric form, the Kia Niro’s superior technology, spacious cabin and mature dynamics shine through in whichever version you choose. The hybrid is powered by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine sourced from the original Niro, but the second-generation model looks fresh in everything else.
Kia’s compact SUV runs on the company’s K3 platform, and while the hybrid isn’t the smoothest performer, it offers strong efficiency and the Niro is more comfortable to drive. It meets all but the roughest surfaces, and thanks to its boxy shape, passengers have plenty of room to relax. Derived from the EV6 – the Niro’s smart, feature-rich infotainment system – best in class.
Its bold styling won’t be for everyone, but it doesn’t deny the Hyundai Tucson’s depth as a family SUV. In fact, it’s so good, we’ve named it the midsize SUV of 2022. The hybrid model uses a 1.6-liter 230-hp electric-assisted drivetrain, and its efficiency figures are respectable for such a roomy, tech-packed machine.
Like the Kia Sportage, which shares its strengths with the Hyundai, the Tucson drives intelligently without expecting sportiness, and its quiet ride makes it a comfortable companion for long trips. Inside, the well-built and attractive cabin makes generous use of fingerprint-prone gloss black trim, and there’s generous standard equipment.
Most Economical Family Cars 2023
The fourth and fifth models on this list are almost interchangeable, so the Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson are closely matched. The Hyundai is a touch more affordable and a touch more cushioned over bumps, but for some the Kia’s radical styling and roomier interior are worth the extra cost.
A compliant suspension setup and light steering make the Sportage less engaging, but rear-seat passengers will appreciate the impressive cabin space, and those up front have impressive 12.3-inch infotainment displays. These give access to Kia’s class-leading technology suite, including sat-nav, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard.
From the outside, the latest Renault Clio is an evolution of its predecessor, but major changes under the skin have brought it to the sharp end of the supermini market. Unlike competitors such as the Skoda Fabia and Hyundai i20, the Clio offers a full hybrid powertrain that combines a 1.6-liter gasoline engine with an electric motor to produce 143 hp.
The hybrid gets over 60km/h and goes from 0-62km/h in less than ten seconds, and the rest of the package is a significant improvement over the old car. The Clio is quite engaging on twisty roads, and the weighted suspension offers a decent mix of precision and comfort. Cabin quality is also very strong, with the five-door body style alone providing ample rear space for adults and a large 391-litre boot.
Top 10 Best Hybrid Suvs To Buy 2023
The once ugly and rugged 4×4 has become an innovative and economical SUV in the last generation. With the rise of SUVs in recent years, it’s no surprise that the Toyota RAV4 has become a desirable model with a hybrid engine. In fact, it is only available in electrified form, with a ‘self-charging’ hybrid version using a 2.5 liter petrol engine combined with an electric motor.
The RAV4 is surprisingly easy to drive for a relatively tall and heavy vehicle, but although the hybrid system can return more than 50 mpg, it delivers its performance noisily thanks to its CVT. Still, the RAV4 is a practical machine despite its integrated electric gibbons, and fit and finish are solid. The dated infotainment system lets him down a bit.
Overtaking BMW in the premium SUV segment is no mean feat, but Lexus has done just that with the latest NX. The company has always impressed customers with exceptional comfort, build quality and an excellent dealer network, and the NX packs these qualities into the pace package of the X3.
The NX 350h combines the latest Toyota RAV4 powertrain technology into a richer, more refined SUV, and while it’s objectively the better car, it’s a better value for a more affordable Toyota. Still, buyers will appreciate the quiet road manners and sleek interior of the NX, which has the slickest technology package we’ve ever seen in a Lexus. With the optional 14-inch touchscreen setup, you definitely won’t need more pixels.
Toyota Sequoia First Drive Review: A 3 Row Hybrid Suv Has No Right To Be This Fun
Like its Yaris and RAV4 cousins on this list, the Corolla is another model now offered with Toyota’s ‘self-charging’ petrol-electric hybrid technology.
The British-built hatchback is available in 1.8- and 2.0-liter models, both of which automatically switch between the two power sources and use the car’s gasoline engine to charge the battery. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) replaces the traditional automatic transmission, helping to make the most of the drivetrain’s power.
Those who want a little more punch can choose the excellent 2.0 liter hybrid model. With 177 hp on tap, 0-62 km/h takes 7.9 seconds; and fuel economy
