Best Midsize Suv For 2 Car Seats
The 2022 Car Seat Fit Report Card completes a year’s worth of our car seat tests in 52 vehicles. Editor-in-Chief Jenny Newman and I are both certified child safety experts, and mothers of children who have gone through all the car seat stages. From large three-row SUVs and minivans to small crossovers and sedans, we’ve installed child safety seats in each and tested how well the vehicles accommodate the different models. We also look at the locking system for each vehicle, the lower anchor and the upper anchor, which are things
Toyota Rav4 Prime Review: Kids, Carseats & Safety
Car seat testing was launched in 2010 and over the years we have installed car seats in over 650 vehicles. Each year, there are a few who pass our car seat checks, earning the highest grade of A in every category. For 2022, the following cars are on the 2022 honors list:
However, not all cars are successful. Below is our 2022 Car Seat Fit Report card, grouped by vehicle type. We include the Chicco KeyFit 30 car seat, the Graco Contender 65 convertible, and the Graco TurboBooster in every car we test. The front seats are suitable for a 6-foot driver and a short passenger. Three car seats are placed in the second row of the car, with an additional seat behind the driver. Child seats and convertible seats are placed behind the passenger seat. For three-row SUVs and minivans, we install a convertible and forward-facing seat in the third row and measure how easy or difficult it is to reach the third row.
We use letter grades to rate each vehicle. For more information on a specific car, click on the check that corresponds to the car seat.
Two-row SUVs come in a variety of sizes, from popular compact SUVs to midsize open-top versions. In families with one to two children, it is easier to cope with family life.
Which Luxury Cars Have The Best Back Seats?
Three-row SUVs have dethroned minivans as the family’s destination of choice. Families want as much functionality as possible on that third row, so they should pay attention to how many upper anchors are back and how easy or difficult it is for their child to reach the third row with a little help.
It’s safe to say we love minivans, especially after taking a dive into the class, naming the Kia Carnival the best minivan in a recent comparison. The minivan is able to give birth with its amazing use of space, useful technology for the family – vacuum! – and more.
Americans love their trucks, and most trucks can easily handle a family’s life. Wide crew cabs usually have enough space for all kinds of car seats, and can usually hold three in the back seat. However, using the top tether anchor correctly in the van can sometimes be more frustrating than negotiating bedtime with your little one.
Sedans are no longer popular with many car buyers, but they are worth looking at for families, especially with the current lack of inventory. You might get a good deal on an overlooked sedan, making your wallet happy.
Cars For Big Families That Fit 3 Car Seats In The 2nd Row
Is it a hatchback or a small SUV? We can drive in it, but hatchback performance would be good.
With 52 vehicles tested in 2022, it’s clear that families have many options. When shopping for your next family car, there’s a lot to consider, including which car will suit your needs now and in a few years. This means more car seats

2023 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid Expert Review: Less Slow, Still Stable By Road Test Editor Brian Normile
2023 Toyota Prius Prime Expert Review: Sportier for sure, but why? By Brian Normile Road test Edio Parents often look for the holy grail of a car: a car that isn’t a minivan and can fit three children in the back seat. In our car seat tests, we found the answer – which includes minivans, in case you change your mind.
In more than 10 years our editors have installed car seats in cars to test fit and space, we’ve come across SUVs, vans and trucks that can hold three car seats comfortably and safely in the back seat of a car.
As we come across more trucks, vans and SUVs that fit three child safety seats, we will add to this list. In the meantime, here are our reviews of car seats that can fit three car seats in the second row:
Top 10 Suvs For Rear Legroom In 2020
For the car seat test, the front seats were adjusted to a comfortable position for a 6-foot driver and a 5-foot passenger. Three child seats are installed in the second row – a seat with a back booster, a convertible car seat and a rear-facing child safety seat. We use Graco, Chicco and Britak car seats in our reviews. We install car seats with a latch anchor or with a seat belt if we cannot use the Latch due to difficulty or unavailability.
A booster seat is located behind the driver’s seat, and child seats and booster seats (front and rear) are located behind the passenger seat. We also put a child seat in the second row of the middle seat with a booster and convertible in the outboard seats to see if three car seats will fit.
To fit, a child sitting in a booster seat must be able to reach the seat belt buckle and all three seats must be at the right angles for safety – no crowding. In some cases, our three car seats do not fit and a smaller car seat may fit better. If there is a third row, we install an assistant seat and a convertible in the front.

2023 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid Expert Review: Less Slow, Still Stable By Road Test Editor Brian Normile
2023 Toyota Prius Prime Expert Review: Sportier for sure, but why? By Brian Normile Road Test Edition of the things we carry around in our cars, among the most important are our children and their car seats. For many families – especially large ones – a three-row SUV is a natural choice: many offer an attractive mix of cargo space, passenger space, creature comforts and safety features. While they have a life-size advantage over the standard sedan, the question is how well they fit in child safety seats.
Suvs Worth Waiting For: Redesigned & New Models Only
We test car seats in the most popular cars in the segment to find out which seat handles are the best. Here’s how they measure up:
VW’s latest — and largest — SUV scored so well in our car seat test that it made our annual honors list. The Atlas is straight A thanks to its easy-to-reach detachable anchors and open second and third lines. Bonus: Easily fits three car seats across the second-row bench.
Redesigned for 2017, now smaller, the midsize Acadia still wins for child safety seats with the biggest gain in second- and third-row legroom. Although you can only have two rows of seats, we tested the three-row Acadia Denali with captain’s chairs in the second row.
Big and bulky, the Dodge Durango is a slow-tossing SUV, but it’s great when it comes to hauling kids and towing a boat or RV. The Durango’s second-row bench easily accommodated rear-facing car seats in our test, but the partially covered third-row anchor lost a point.

Honda’s big SUV handles well with seating in all three rows, and there’s plenty of room for three.
