With the recent fluctuations in gas prices, the hybrid segment continues to grow in popularity. However, the advancement of hybrid technology has left many wondering which model offers the best value and reliability. We’ve rounded up the top three hybrids and SUVs that Consumer Reports says will fill a variety of needs and pay for themselves every time you fill up.
According to Consumer Reports, the best hybrid SUV is the 2023 Lexus NX Hybrid. As a small luxury SUV, the various models of the Lexus NX have sticker prices ranging from $38,000 to $58,000.
The NX Hybrid starts at around $43,000, about $5,000 more than its petrol variant. With an EPA-estimated combined fuel economy of 28 mpg for the regular NX and 39 mpg for the NX Hybrid, expect the hybrid to save you about $600 a year if gas stays around $4.00 a gallon and you drive 15,000 miles a year.
The Lexus NX Hybrid is a great choice for anyone looking for a small but comfortable SUV with excellent reliability. While the Lexus NX Hybrid has the latest technology you’d expect from a high-end luxury brand, its handling falls short of rivals like the Audi Q5 and BMW X3. Despite the competition’s superior handling, it’s hard to ignore the NX Hybrid’s reliability.
Do Hybrid Vehicles Get Discharged? The Truths About Hybrid Cars
Based on a survey of vehicle owners, Consumer Reports called the Toyota Corolla Hybrid the most reliable hybrid. The 2023 Toyota Corolla starts at $21,550 and gets an EPA-estimated 39 mpg combined, while the Corolla Hybrid starts at $22,800 and gets about 47 mpg combined.
That difference in fuel economy translates to a savings of about $260 a year, but Consumer Reports found that fuel economy differs from the EPA’s test estimates.
The Toyota Corolla is a perennial favorite due to its low price, exceptional quality, high predicted reliability and advanced safety features. The Corolla Hybrid meets or exceeds these expectations on every level, and gets better fuel economy.
If you need more utility than your sports car, but still want exceptional fuel economy and above-average reliability, consider the 2023 Ford Maverick. The 2023 Ford Maverick XL starts around $22,000 and seats five people with a payload of 1,500 pounds.
Best Hybrid Suvs For 2022
Opting for the hybrid powertrain adds about $1,700 to the price and improves EPA-estimated combined fuel economy from 26 mpg to 37 mpg.
The Maverick Hybrid’s increased fuel economy translates into savings of nearly $690 per year, but as always, results may vary. The bad news is that if you want all-wheel drive, you’re stuck with a non-hybrid powertrain.
With better fuel economy, the hybrid will eventually pay for itself at the pump. How long this payback takes depends on the additional cost of the hybrid version, the number of kilometers traveled and the price of a liter of gasoline. However, lower fuel costs are only one way a hybrid can save you money.
Most hybrids use a regenerative braking system that uses the electric motor to charge the hybrid system’s battery. Regen slows the vehicle down without using the traditional friction brakes that non-hybrids rely on.

But do not worry; The hybrid still has a traditional friction braking system.
