When calculating fuel costs, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) assumes 15,000 miles traveled annually. To determine how much money drivers can save over five years, the agency compares fuel costs to those of the average vehicle, which in 2022 gets 27 miles per gallon.
And because this list is about saving money, we excluded models that cost more than $50,000 (the average price paid for a new car today is about $45,000).

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, also called plug-in hybrid electric vehicles or PHEVs, have been the right choice for many drivers for most of this decade, until the number of public charging stations increases, the profitability of battery packs improves and the overall prices of pure battery electric vehicles fall.
Half of our favorite add-ons travel at least 30 miles, which is the length of the average round trip in the United States, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. Others take you to work and you start your way home. None of them will leave you stranded because they have an engine and a gas tank.
Statistics on “electric cars” can sometimes be misleading. Does it include plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) or only battery electric vehicles? It goes both ways. All add-ons can earn at least a portion of the federal tax credit available up to $7,500. The balance depends on battery size and varies widely between PHEVs. A vehicle powered by a 16.0 kWh battery qualifies for a full $7,500 credit.

The electric motor in the compact BMW X5 xDrive45e takes you to 60 mph in less than 4 seconds. Most plug-ins are not only more efficient than their petrol version, but also faster.
The electric motor generates maximum power (torque) at much lower rpm than its petrol engine companion. Even when the car switches to petrol mode, the battery still has enough power for the electric motor to act as a booster, which is essentially a turbocharger. While the electric motor and lithium-ion battery are supposed to improve mpg, it gets past 60 mph a second or two faster. Toyota’s RAV4 Prime (what it calls the PHEV version) takes 5.7 seconds, two seconds less than the RAV4’s gas engine.

Australia’s Best Selling Hybrids And Plug In Hybrids Of 2022
The battery-only version of the Clarity (discontinued last year) EV had limited range, but the PHEV has a lot to recommend it, including 48 electric miles from the 17-kWh battery pack. The 1.5-liter four-cylinder (which rarely drives the wheels) is paired with a beefy electric motor to produce a combined 212 horsepower and an efficient 0-60 time of 8.1 seconds. Owners praise the comfort and ride quality, although the back seat could be larger. Clarity $33,400 gets a full $7,500 credit.
Here’s what the plug-in should be: a PHEV version of the RAV4 for $38,500, with an 18.1-kWh battery, 42-mile EV range, and 600 miles total. It’s an amazing journey. Some reviewers say the actual display is even better than that. There’s also a combined 302 horsepower in the RAV4, making it the fastest four-door Toyota ever. Only the Supra has faster acceleration. The RAV4 Prime gets a whopping $7,500 tax credit. The higher-end XSE model ($41,675) offers plenty of useful features, including 19-inch wheels, paddle shifters, and some safety gear. There were also some improvements over the $28,220 Prius Prime sedan, which now has 25 miles of EV range. But it’s an even more ferocious beast, with a 121-horsepower engine. A $28,220 Prius Prime qualifies for a $4,502 federal tax credit. If there’s an add-on to buy, make it the RAV4 Prime.
Toyota produced the first hybrids Americans could buy, and Ford had its first American entry with the Escape in 2004. They then proved their worth as taxis on the rugged streets of New York. The Escape PHEV ($34,755, $6,843 credit) uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine mated to an electric motor for a total of 221 horsepower. Electric range is 37 miles (530 total) via a 14.4 kWh battery pack. There is no all-wheel drive version. It’s worth upgrading to the $38,000 SEL trim, which adds heated simulated leather front seats.
