Car Seat Placement In Suv – Parents are often looking for the automotive holy grail: a car that isn’t a van and can fit three kids in the back seat. We find the answer in our car seat controls, including some minivans if you think about it.
In the more than 10 years that our editors have installed car seats in vehicles to test their fit and capacity, we’ve come across SUVs, vans and pickup trucks that fit three car seats comfortably and safely in the vehicle’s back seat.
Car Seat Placement In Suv
We’ll be adding to this list as we find more trucks, pickups, and SUVs that have three child seats. For now, here are some of our car seat controls that can accommodate three car seats in the second row:
Child Seat Laws In The Usa & Canada
As for the car’s seat controls, the front seats are adjusted to a comfortable position for a 1.8-foot-tall driver and a 5-foot-by-6-inch passenger. There are three child seats in the second row – a high-back seat, a convertible car seat and a rear-facing child safety seat. We use Graco, Chicco and Britax car seats in our range. If we cannot use the latch due to difficulty or inaccessibility, we install car seats using latches or with seat belts.
A booster seat is located behind the driver’s seat, and child and convertible seats (in forward-facing mode) are installed behind the passenger seat. We put a child seat in the middle seat of the second row on the booster and convertible outboard seats to see if three car seats will fit.
To install, the seat belt buckles must be accessible to the child in the seat and all three seats must be at the correct angle for safety – do not squeeze them. In some cases, our three car seats just about fit, and smaller car seats may fit better. If there is a third row, we install a seat and a forward-facing convertible top.

Expert Review 2023 Toyota Prius Prime Review: Sure, Sportier, But Why? Brian Normal Road Test Editing When baby B was five days old, we went car shopping for our new mum. I was adamant about changing the van, but Dee insisted that a third-row SUV was a better option for our family. Here we are ten months later and I absolutely love my car. I love that it feels compact without taking up space. Going out with three kids is functional and easy for me. I’m not kidding when I say that we’ve successfully completed our monthly Costco hauls (with a little creative storage). And as a family of five and two dogs, we took quite a few trips! Talk about a lot to pack into an SUV!

Here are some factors that affect how comfortably three car seats can fit in our SUV for a family of five:
When we spoke to our product expert at buybuy BABY, he updated us on all our options. Given our space needs and the fact that all three children are at different stages of car seats, we chose the Diono Radian RXT convertible car seats. The perfect all-in-one convertible car seat for each of our sons. B has just moved into a convertible car seat and is rear facing at 10 months. C 2.5 and still have a back. They both sit in the second row of the SUV. 5.5 and Diono Radian RXT are forward facing. The car seat will easily adjust with the booster seat belt as the car grows, so the size and fit range is wide and perfect for the safety and needs of each of our boys. Here’s a visual map of how to fit three car seats in an SUV. This is for us because the third row of our SUV has second row captain’s seats. This makes it easier for A to get in and out of the car seat and to get in and out of the car seat.
The Diono Radian RXT’s premium materials and thoughtful safety features, such as a steel alloy frame, aluminum-reinforced sidewalls, and energy-absorbing EPS foam, give you peace of mind while your little one stays safe and sound. A reinforced adjustable headrest provides additional protection against side impacts. Rear seats for children from 5 to 45 pounds. and advanced infants weighing 20 to 80 pounds. 5-point seat belt (up to 57 inches) long. Converts to booster for children 50-120 pounds or up to 57 inches tall.
Depending on the size and layout of the SUV, a compact vehicle can definitely have three car seats. If there was a second row of seats, we could choose to place all three car seats in the second row. Many of my friends with three kids have this setup and it has plenty of luggage space. The D is a large SUV and some of our older car seats rotate. We use our car primarily as a family vehicle and we keep his car as a backup when needed. I will also post about installing car seats soon.
Nuna Exec All In One Car Seat Review
I love that the Diono Radian RXT convertible car seats will work in any vehicle, although we may need to upgrade to a larger car as the boys get older. I plan to stand in the second row facing both C and B until I reach their car seat limit. From there we will move forward but stay in the second row so we can continue to use our luggage space in front of and behind the third row A seat. So I’ll be with Team SUV for the foreseeable future.

How To Make Sure Your Child Car Seat Is Fitted Correctly
We get asked all the time what large 3-row SUVs we recommend for families. Honestly, we don’t recommend any of these…we recommend an 8-seat Honda Odyssey or Chrysler Pacifica minivan (no, we don’t want any Hondas or Chryslers…or any other manufacturer found. ).
The IIHS doesn’t crash test large SUVs, so obviously we don’t know how safe they are. Automakers know which IIHS vehicles are most likely to be tested, and manufacturers work very hard to ensure those vehicles receive the best IIHS scores. There may not be much of that motivation in these untested large SUVs.
Below are the 3-row SUVs that the IIHS hasn’t (and probably won’t) test. If the vehicle you’re thinking of isn’t on this list or in the table above, it may not have been tested by the IIHS and wasn’t good enough to earn points in crash tests or forward collision avoidance technology. High enough to enter our buying guide.
If you prefer a large 3-row SUV that hasn’t been tested by the IIHS, the 2018 Ford Expedition/Lincoln Navigator is a clear winner. Note that the Expedition and Navigator have been completely redesigned for 2018, and it’s a stunning new design. Since Expedition and Navigator are the same tool, we’ll keep it simple and call it Expedition… but you’ll understand that we’re also talking about Navigator.
