Calling these SUVs “small”-compacts is a bit of a misnomer because most of them aren’t as fast as the name suggests. Small SUVs are relatively large, so the small car segment is still large. The Corolla Cross fares well against its competition in front seat comfort thanks to legroom and headroom. Unlike small, slightly raised hatchbacks called SUVs (like the CX-30), the Corolla Cross has a high seating position, so you feel like you’re driving an SUV that’s larger than the norm for this segment.

The Corolla Cross’ cargo space behind the rear seat is also on the wide side for the subcompact class; by our own measurements, it’s the second largest we’ve tested:

The back seat, however, is small even for this class. According to the manufacturer’s specifications, the Corolla Cross has 32.0 inches of rear seat legroom, compared to 39.4 inches for the Trailblazer, 38.0 inches for the Seltos, 36.5 inches for the Crosstrek and 36.3 inches for the CX-30. Comparing measurements between different automakers isn’t always meaningful due to different approaches, but the RAV4 has 37.8 inches of rear-seat legroom and the smaller C-HR has 31.7 inches, so even within the Toyota family, things are tough and Corolla Cross. .
Rear legroom felt cramped when I sat behind the driver’s seat in my preferred seating position, although it’s comfortable with good cushion support and legroom. We feel the Seltos has the best rear passenger space and the most features. A bonus for the Corolla Cross is that it has rear passenger air vents, like the Seltos, which is unique to the segment.
Corolla Cross rear seat restraints also affect the installation of child safety seats. In our tests, the car seats didn’t fit well without significantly compromising front-seat comfort; We give it a D (on an A-F scale) when it comes to child seat placement, and the rear seats are adjustable because the front seats have to be moved forward, leaving less room for front passengers. The Trailblazer, Seltos, Crosstrek and CX-30 all earned top marks in our car seat tests.
The Corolla crossover doesn’t have a hint of sporty handling, unlike the properly sporty CX-30. That’s a good thing because this class doesn’t need more than options in terms of performance and stability related to driving. The Corolla Cross’s ride is a bit bumpy at times, but it’s aimed on the slower side, so highway driving is a pleasure and never disappoints because it doesn’t hit any big bumps. The benchmark here is the Crosstrek, and I don’t think the Corolla Cross is far behind Subaru’s ride quality standards.

The interior quality of the Corolla Cross is as expected for this class and price range, starting around $23,000. It sits between the luxurious CX-30 at the top end and the affordable Trailblazer and Seltos at the bottom. The upholstery on the upper front doors of the Corolla Cross is an area of exceptional beauty, although that richness is lost in the back seat, where the door panels are hard plastic throughout. Again, this is not the largest SUV for rear passengers.
The only powertrain is a 169-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder with a continuously variable transmission. Unfortunately, despite the competitive specs, we saw the Corolla Cross’ poor acceleration from our first drive. Our all-wheel drive Corolla Cross XLE test car accelerated from 0-60 mph in 9.83 seconds, which would have been just ahead of the slowest comparison, the Trailblazer (9.91 seconds). Note, however, that the faster Crosstrek and Seltos have more powerful secondary engines, with the latter being faster (8.03 seconds). The Corolla crossover can stack up against the regular engines of the Crosstrek and Seltos, but it doesn’t have the engine upgrades they have.
This is not a class where outright speed is important, but the acceleration of the Corolla Cross stands out in everyday driving. And it doesn’t skimp on fuel economy: With an EPA-estimated 30 mpg with AWD, it bests the Crosstrek’s optional 2.5-liter engine by just 1 mpg combined, the turbocharged 1.3-liter by 2 mpg, and the Selto’s supercharged. 1.6-liter and The CX-30 standard 2.5-liter each gets 3 mpg. We expect the Corolla Cross to get hybrid power at some point in the future, so a hybrid gasoline-electric powertrain could be a solution to the lack of conventional electric power.
Our loaded Corolla Cross XLE includes an optional 8-inch touchscreen, with an easy-to-use multimedia interface and operating system that also includes real volume and adjustment controls—and it’s not touch-sensitive. buttons (hooray) or an additional set of buttons like the Crosstrek. Some offer more buttons, others less, but the Corolla Cross is in the sweet spot with a standard touchscreen layout unlike something like the CX-30, which has a center-mounted dashboard and no touchscreen.

The Corolla crossover is slightly disappointed by the low-resolution touchscreen and backup camera image, and the lack of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; only wired versions of each are included. The Selto’s user interface is top of the line, but the Corolla Cross offers a good challenge by not doing anything crazy.
Subcompact SUV doesn’t mean small, but it doesn’t mean cheap either. The spec Corolla Cross we tested, the XLE trim with AWD, was $33,550 with destination charge and an optional 8-inch touchscreen, a JBL sound system, a moonroof, auto-adjustable headlights and a pair of headlights. about odds and ends. That would put it on the more expensive side in our comparison of higher-end models, which ranged from about $29,000 to $32,000. However, the average price of new Corolla crossovers listed on the national registry in February 2022 is $25,722, so sales are relatively cheap and compare favorably with its competitors.
Where the Corolla Cross excels is in the categories of safety features and technical support for drivers. Corolla Cross comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, features include cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane stop and road sign recognition. Our XLE also includes blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert and brake assist, as well as front and rear parking sensors with automatic rear braking. As with any multi-car test, when comparing specs or results, you should know what is most important to you and focus on those areas.
