Good Suv Cars For New Drivers – According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and Consumer Reports, the Toyota Corolla is one of the least expensive models on the list of best cars for young drivers.
Handing over the car keys to your son or daughter for the first time is definitely life-changing. For the new driver, this means the ultimate freedom to leave home without having to worry about driving. However, for parents, this is an important stage that is often filled with fear and paranoia.

Of course, eventually a young driver needs a unique journey to go to college or start a career with a hands-on degree. While many parents or adults can buy a used car as their first car for a few thousand dollars or less, experts say that’s not always the best way to go. Instead, families should dig deeper into their pockets to help a young driver get a new car that’s built for safety and equipped with the latest crash prevention features. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, traffic accidents remain the leading cause of death for Americans ages 15 to 19.

Fortunately, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) teamed up with Consumer Reports (CR) to compile a short list of 18 new cars and SUVs that are best for young drivers based on several criteria. Prices range from $20,000 to $30,000, but this can be money well spent to help a beginner on a journey that is considered safe and reliable.
“It can be tempting for a teenager to buy a smaller and smaller model,” says David Harkey, president of the IIHS. “But we know that teenagers are some of the most dangerous drivers, so safety shouldn’t be taken for granted. A little more money on modern safety features and crash prevention is a worthwhile investment in your child’s future.”
Each of the recommended models is equipped with an automatic emergency brake, which prevents or at least reduces the intensity of a frontal collision with a parked car or other obstacles. The IIHS named them all Top Safety Picks or Top Safety Picks+ for 2020.
In addition, each model is rated as having moderate or better reliability based on CR participant surveys. They also scored average or better in the CR’s crash and brake tests. As if that wasn’t enough, each received a good or better rating from CR for ease of use of the controls to avoid distractions while driving.
Best Cars For New Drivers
You won’t find any high-powered sports cars on this list, which should be there for obvious reasons, and there are no small cars under 27,000 pounds. Despite advances in occupant protection, the laws of physics dictate that a larger, heavier vehicle provides greater occupant protection in a crash than a smaller, lighter vehicle.
Also, none of the cars listed have made more than the average insurance claim for medical bills or personal injury protection in recent years, and they haven’t been significantly redesigned since then.

Small SUVs, also known as crossovers, are big business for automakers. Most models are based on the supermini chassis, but boast a higher driving position and the added flexibility that many drivers crave. The combination of lower running costs and more space makes these small SUVs attractive not just as alternatives to superminis, but as rivals to traditional family cars.

Kia has gone bold with its latest Niro. Combining revolutionary styling with modern electrification, the Korean car won the small SUV award at the annual New Car Awards earlier this year. Built on an all-new platform, this latest Niro offers more space than before, while its modern interior looks good, is well put together and includes plenty of useful technology.

However, the compact crossover really packs a punch with buyers able to choose between automatic and hybrid versions, with the latter offering up to 40 miles of zero-emissions range.
However, it’s the all-electric Niro EV that’s the confirmed star of the series, with a massive 64kWh battery that delivers 286 miles of range. It also has strong acceleration and refinement, and like the other versions, it has decent handling and a decent ride.
Add to that attractive price, plenty of standard equipment and the brand’s seven-year warranty, and the Niro won’t keep you warm on cold winter days.
If you want the style and substance of a small SUV, look no further than the Captur. The family car is a former winner of the New Car Awards. And although the Kia Niro took first place this year, the Renault is still very desirable.

Despite its compact size, it packs a surprising amount of space inside, and its sliding rear seat adds extra practicality. The interior also has a high level of appeal, with a sophisticated design, plenty of premium materials and an attractive portrait-style infotainment system.
It’s not quite as sharp in handling as some rivals, but the soft suspension and strong understeer mean it’s more comfortable and relaxing. Also, unlike most in its class, Renault offers a powerful and efficient hybrid version that delivers 158 horsepower and a 30-mile all-electric range.
Puma is currently the second best selling car in the UK and it’s not hard to see why. Whether you want to relax behind the wheel or haul your family and all their gear, the beautiful Blue Oval has you covered.

The interior of the Puma is relatively spacious and well equipped, with an impressive 80 liter Megabox hidden under the boot. While the cabin isn’t as premium as some rivals, Ford’s SYNC 3 infotainment system ensures seamless connectivity.

The Kia Soul EV offers decent performance along with decent levels of refinement, comfort and technology. The high list price may be a problem for some, but it is helped by low running costs, zero road tax and no commission to worry about.
The operation is very good, the volume of the luggage is 315 liters, and if you fold the rear seats – 1339 liters. You also have the option of lowering the boot floor to free up a bit more space. Legroom and headroom are quite acceptable and taller passengers can travel comfortably, although the middle seat in the back seat is more suitable for children.
There’s plenty of power to ensure quick and smooth handling – an electric motor sends 201bhp and 395Nm of torque to the front wheels, powered by a 64kW lithium-ion battery mounted under the floor. 0-100 mph takes 7.6 seconds and, at least on paper, the Soul EV will return 280 miles on a single charge.
Taking a cue from current SUV sales, Toyota has created an SUV-like version of the Yaris supermini. Thanks to its tall height and tight body cladding, the Cross certainly looks the part, while its all-wheel drive means it can achieve details that other small cars can’t.

The Yaris Cross gets the same 1.5-litre petrol-electric hybrid and continuously variable transmission as its hatchback, which equates to a fuel economy of over 60mpg. And while it’s not all that fun to drive, the Yaris handles well and is well designed. If you need an economical and compact car, this should be on your list.
The Camik may be the starting point of Skoda’s popular SUV range, but it’s a small car that likes to think. It’s based on the same platform as the SEAT Arona and VW T-Cross, but clever packaging means there’s slightly more passenger space and a bigger boot.
Like other models of the Czech brand, the interior looks beautiful and elegant with all the necessary technologies. Skoda is also a much more affordable choice than its friends in the VW group, thank you
