Every article or news we do about an electric car — and there’s been a lot of EV news lately — gets a comment thread full of people discussing the cost of charging an EV. “Hydro prices are too high”, “Maybe when electricity is cheap”, “Who can drive when I use cheap gas” and best of all “Filling the tank is half the price of a connection”. ,
We have seen that consumers are not aware of how much it costs to charge their EV. I understood
And they had no idea how much it would cost to fill up an EV. But I wanted to learn. We all know how much it costs to put gas in the tank – watch the lines if an overnight price hike is expected – but electricity is stable and predictable. But how much does it cost to “charge” an electric car?
The first step is to find out the cost of electricity. In most states, it’s easy. Most states have a specific price and tax. For example, in New Brunswick, the cost of electricity is $0.1076/kWh after a 15 percent tax. In states with prescribed service charges, we have not included these charges. We didn’t count it anyway, EV or not, because you have to pay for it. But the province is very complex.
Electric Car Charging Cost Vs. Gas: Study Shows Evs Still Cost More
Ontario has a patchwork of electricity providers, not just a three-day average (and a newer but less used system). Each has a different fee for getting electricity to your door, some have multiple rates depending on where you live. This makes it difficult to count every individual in the state, but we can get an idea of the state’s scope using best-case and worst-case scenarios. Worse, we used rural delivery costs and higher time rates. Best of all, we’ve got access to overnight rates with within-city delivery charges.
For states that use a different rate for your first KW package, we’ve used this lower rate. Our assumption is that it is impossible to tell which kilowatt goes where, and the difference is not significant in our calculations.
The next step is to figure out how much electricity is needed to charge the car. Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), the same agency that estimates fuel economy, estimates the use of electric vehicles. Part of their calculation is the average kW/100 km for all electric vehicles. We’ll use their combined city/highway rating as the amount of power used to drive 100km.
We use two electric vehicles in our calculations. 2022 Hyundai Kona Electric and 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E Long Range AWD. Mid-BEV compact and extra premium long range electric SUV. In terms of fuel efficiency, we chose the 2022 Honda Civic sedan to put it next to the Kona EV. It is the best-selling car in Canada, offering a similar cabin and footprint. To match the Mach-E, we selected one of Canada’s most popular mid-size crossovers. Hyundai Santa Fe (2.5T) is a popular SUV that offers similar length, width and height along with fuel efficiency.

When combined, the Honda Civic returns 6.9 litres/100 km (with any available engine). At the time of writing, the average price of regular gasoline in Canada is $1,585/L. Multiplying the two numbers together gives a driving cost of about $10.94 per 100 km, assuming the Civic follows the official mileage rate (unusual for any gas car, but let’s say it’s all for comparison). completes. British Columbians and Newfoundlanders, your gas is more expensive than in the rest of the country, so your costs will be $12.28 and $11.94 per 100 km, respectively (Alberta is $10.01 more expensive).
The Hyundai Kona EV consumes 17.4 kWh of electricity for a range of 100 km. This is where the math gets complicated.
In Quebec, it’s 6,159¢/kWh plus eight per cent tax, and will run the meter for just $1.23 – an estimated savings of almost 90 per cent compared to the cost of gas. But Quebec’s prices are among the cheapest in the country, so let’s take a look at the worst prices in rural Ontario. Rural Ontario has the highest electricity grid costs in the country during peak hours. Electricity there and there costs 20.67¢/kWh plus tax. Again, this is more of a big fixed cost, but since you’re not getting rid of your fridge anytime soon, we won’t count it. So in rural Ontario, the most expensive part of the country for electricity, a Kona EV would cost $4.06 per 100km. That’s about a third of the cost of filling up a car with gas.
But wait, charge the car overnight or anytime on a cheap weekend, as most EV owners do, and the cost drops to a maximum of $2.33 in Ontario. If you are not in a rural area, the cost is only $2.03.

So, at best, the Kona EV costs less than 11 percent of the Civic, and at worst, about 38 percent. On average across the country, it costs about 78 percent more to fill up an electric car than it does to fill up the same car that uses gasoline.
What about SUV? The Hyundai Santa Fe 2.5-liter turbo-four makes 277 horsepower and uses 9.9 l/100 km. That works out to $15.69 ($17.62 in BC, $17.13 in NL, and $14.36 in EU) to drive 100 km. The Ford Mustang uses the Mach-E 23.1kW/100km, which costs $1.64 in Quebec, $5.40 at worst in Ontario, and a national average of $3.24. Almost identical here, the cost of filling up at Mach-E is 79 percent less than filling up at Santa Fe.
Now we know how much it will cost to charge electric cars. Most EVs are even within a few cents of the cost of the two we used because they all offer shocking (zing!) performance and are about the same size in terms of body size and weight. And they have other tricks.
