The Mirage 2022 is not only the least fuel-hungry car on the market, but also one of the most fuel-efficient. Only the front-wheel-drive Mirage hatchback and Mirage G4 sedan are powered by a 78-horsepower 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine. A five-speed manual transmission is standard and a continuously variable automatic is optional. The Mirage is the most fuel-efficient hatchback with the CVT, rated at 36/43/39 mpg city/highway/combined. The Mirage G4 sedan is rated at 35/41/37 mpg with the CVT, and with the manual transmission, fuel economy drops to 33/41/36 and 33/40/35 mpg for the hatch and sedan, respectively.

The 2022 Hyundai Elantra offers buyers a variety of engine and transmission options, all with front-wheel drive. The Elantra makes its second appearance as a hybrid model here, and its 1.6-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine, electric motor, and battery system output 139 horsepower, the same as the Ioniq. The only transmission option is a six-speed dual-clutch automatic. The blue version is the most efficient at 53/56/54 mpg; Better-equipped models are rated at 49/52/50 mpg.
The Honda Insight Hybrid is next on the list, with a total system output of 151 horsepower from a 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine combined with two electric motors and a battery. The Insight is available in EX or Touring trims, with the lowest-priced EX at 55/49/52 mpg and the Touring at 51/45/48 mpg.
With a similar engine to the Prius hybrid but with traditional ratios, the Corolla Hybrid sedan comes in just one LE model and is rated at 53/52/52 mpg.
The plug-in hybrid version of the Prius uses a larger 8.8-kilowatt-hour rechargeable battery, but the same 1.8-liter gasoline engine and a total system output of 121 horsepower. The EPA rates the Prius Prime at 133 mpg combined on electric and gas and 54 mpg in hybrid mode after the battery is fully charged. It has an all-electric range of 25 miles and a total range of 640 miles.
Suvs And Crossovers With The Best Mpg
Second in this segment is the PHEV version of the Ioniq. Like the Prius Prime, the Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid has the same system output as the Ioniq Hybrid, but with an 8.9kW rechargeable battery. The EPA estimates the Ioniq PHEV to have a 29-mile all-electric range and 620 miles all-terrain, with ratings of 119 mpg and 52 mpg.
The Niro PHEV shares a lot with the corresponding Ioniq PHEV: It also combines a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor and an 8.9 kWh rechargeable battery. Total range is less, at 560 miles, about 26 miles on electric. Efficiency is lower, too: The EPA rates the Niro PHEV at 105 mpg combined and 46 mpg combined.
Rounding out the list is the Ford Escape PHEV compact SUV, powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric CVT with a 14.4 kWh battery. The Escape PHEV is FWD-only, with an estimated all-electric range of 37 miles and an estimated total range of 520 miles. While it ties the Niro for mpg at 105, it’s tied for fourth because the Escape PHEV is only rated at 40 mpg when the initial charge is depleted.
It simply mirrors the power of the Prius, instead combining a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with two electric generator motors and an 18.1 kWh battery. Total system output is 302 horsepower, and the RAV4 Prime also comes standard with AWD (adding a third engine in the rear). It has the longest electric range of any PHEV on this list at 42 miles, for an estimated total range of 600 miles. It is rated at 94 mpg, with a combined rating of 38 mpg in hybrid mode.
