Hybrid Vehicle Best Mileage Cars – Fluctuations in gas prices may prompt you to consider a more fuel-efficient model. Even if you’re not looking for an electric car, some hybrid and plug-in models offer great fuel efficiency without worrying about electric car range.
And don’t rule out non-hybrid models. Some of the most fuel-efficient gas cars on the market make big bucks without the hassle or upfront costs of hybrids.
Hybrid Vehicle Best Mileage Cars
Let’s take a look at the most fuel-efficient hybrids and greenest non-hybrid models on the market, as rated by combined mpg values set by the Environmental Protection Agency. Note: If more than one vehicle has the same fuel economy, we will use city mpg as the tie.
Best Gas Mileage Suvs For 2022
Cheapest Hyundai 005380, -1.41% The Ioniq is the current hybrid champion. Priced at just under $25,000, the base Ioniq Blue rides on special low-rolling tires wrapped in unique wheels designed to manipulate the wind. These tweaks and a few others behind the scenes are worth the 4 mpg overall improvement over the more expensive Ioniq SE.
No longer the fuel economy champion, the Toyota TM -0.96% Prius ranks second behind rival Hyundai. However, there are many good reasons to choose the Prius, especially in Eco trim. As with the Ionic, this trim level is a step up in the line. Forget the big shiny wheels, the Prius Eco uses special aerodynamic fairings and tires that gently dance on the road to save fuel.

Cars That Get Great Mileage
If you want to take on the Honda Prius and Ioniq rivals, act fast. This modern hybrid is an attractive and modest option from Honda HMC, -1.81% after 2022, as the company focuses (again) on the upcoming hybrid version of the Civic. Fuel economy is 55 mpg in the city and 49 mpg on the highway.
This year, Toyota only offers one trim level on the Corolla Hybrid: the fairly well-equipped LE trim. Gets 53 mpg city / 52 mpg highway. With standard adaptive cruise control, remote keyless entry, and dual-zone automatic climate control, it’s more equipped than the sub-$25,000 price tag can offer.
With a large 4-cylinder engine, a spacious interior, and plenty of standard equipment for comfort and safety, the Toyota Camry Hybrid is a top choice among midsize sedans with good fuel economy. The LE trim is more fuel-efficient than the other trims, at 51 city/53 highway mpg, so you might be willing to forgo the pesky hood for a 6 mpg improvement.
Take everything we love about the Hyundai Elantra and turn it into an almost fuel-efficient midsize sedan, and you get the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Blue, which gets 50 mpg in the city and 54 mpg on the highway. Be careful which version of the Sonata Hybrid you buy, as the base Blue model offers a five mpg improvement over the other variants.
Which Toyotas Have The Best Gas Mileage?
The addition of an electric motor to aid in driving and acceleration makes hybrid models more fuel efficient than gas-only ones. This makes them more expensive, so you may need to do some math to determine if a Hybrid is worth it.
Mitsubishi MMTOF, +0.39% The Mirage is an affordable subcompact hatchback with a 78-horsepower 3-cylinder engine that won’t win a stoplight race. However, it will save money no matter how you look at it. It starts at less than $16,000, has relatively good features, and gets only 39 mpg combined.
The sedan version of the Elantra equipped with a 2.0-liter four-wheel drive engine and a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) is at the high end of the compact car fuel economy spectrum. According to the EPA, the typical driver spends about $1,650 on fuel each year, compared to $1,150 for the Elantra Hybrid Blue. Hyundai charges $3,200 more for the Elantra Hybrid Blue than the equivalent Elantra SEL, despite having slightly different equipment (like the hybrid’s heated front seats). It means more than six years to get behind.
The latest sedan version of the Honda Civic returns an impressive 36 mpg when equipped with the CVT and optional turbocharged powertrains. This turbo allows for more power from a small engine, which is combined with the ability of the CVT to rev the engine low during cruise to pull fuel slowly. The EPA estimates the Civic’s fuel economy at 33 mpg city/42 highway.

Kia Rio 000270, -1.50% and Hyundai Accent are models with the same engine, transmission and platform. Therefore they have the same fuel consumption: 33 city, 41 highway and 36 combined. Hyundai’s smallest car doesn’t have much power, but with a combined rating of 36 mpg it doesn’t use much fuel. This small sedan costs less than the Mitsubishi Mirage, and while it’s not as fuel-efficient, the Hyundai’s interior has a more spacious and refined feel.
