There’s a new kid and a grand entrance coming to town in Tucson. Its fuel economy is actually on par with the CR-V and RAV4, and it’s about the same size (it has more usable cargo area, but that’s because it lacks a spare wheel). On the face of it, it’s pretty much in line with its main competitors. The huge differences and strengths of the Tucson Hybrid can be seen inside, with premium design, premium materials and very advanced technology. Whether standard equipment or widescreen, modern touchscreens put Hondas and Toyotas to shame in functionality and beauty. Its driver assistance tech is also better implemented. Overall, the Tucson is the more modern choice. A plug-in hybrid Tucson with a range of 33 miles is also on the way, but we haven’t tested it yet.
Why the Kia Niro and Niro PHEV stand out: Less expensive and better fuel economy than other hybrid SUVs; friendly tech could be better: AWD not available; less room because it’s a small SUV. Hybrid Combined Fuel Economy: 49 mpg city (top trim), 50 mpg city (FE trim) and 43 mpg city (tour trim) PHEV Range: 26 miles PHEV Fuel Economy: 105 MPGe (FWD only) Read our recent Niro PHEV review
The Niro is different from other small hybrid SUVs because it’s smaller and less expensive. It’s technically a subcompact SUV, but since the rest of the range isn’t offered as a hybrid, it’s possible the Niro will spend some time with the big boys. There are pros and cons to your unique position. A big plus is that it’s $3,000 to $6,000 less than other hybrid SUVs, and you’ll definitely notice a substantial 10-mpg improvement. Its fuel economy is on par with the Prius. On the downside, while it’s still quite roomy, the Niro doesn’t deny the passenger and cargo space offered by the more family-friendly CR-V, RAV4, and Tucson. So it’s different, but definitely worth a look.

The RAV4 has more passenger and cargo space than most. The ride is comfortable and responsive (especially the XSE Hybrid and Prime). Its interior is well-crafted with high-quality materials and offers easy-to-use controls and ample storage. Its resale value and reliability should be better than almost any other vehicle on the road. Those are all the basics you’ll find in the RAV4, but the latest version stands out by offering a truly unrivaled range of models. While you won’t really get a hybrid like the Cool Adventure or TRD off-road, the surprisingly sporty XSE trim level (pictured above) is exclusive to the hybrid and shares its sportiness with the RAV4 type suspension (and general characteristics). Prime plug-in hybrid. We love that the RAV4 has something for everyone. (Note that the Toyota Venza is basically a RAV4 hybrid with different styling, a more luxurious cabin, and less space. It’s an alternative worth considering.)

The Sorento is small for a three-row SUV—it basically has the exterior dimensions of a two-row midsize SUV, but manages to squeeze in a third row for those who anticipate needing it occasionally. The Sorento is completely redesigned for 2021, with revised styling to match but not replicate the successful Telluride. Inside, the materials are high-quality, the design is beautiful, and the technology is not only plentiful but user-friendly. The same well-implemented safety and driver assistance features that made the Palisade and Telluride so impressive are also available in the Sorento. Finally, the Sorento benefits from a choice of two hybrid powertrains: a conventional 37-mpg hybrid and, new for 2022, a plug-in hybrid.

On the other hand, interior space is huge compared to most vehicles that manage 35 mpg. No matter how you look at it, the Highlander Hybrid is eye-catching. Beyond fuel economy, the newly redesigned Highlander impresses with its Palisade-rivaling interior quality, composed ride and handling, and extensive feature content. That’s just $1,400 more than a gas-only Highlander V6, meaning you’ll pay back your premiums quickly.

So here’s the deal: Lexus is the only luxury car company currently selling a conventional hybrid. So picking our favorites here is like narrowing down your favorite foods to a restaurant menu. However, we have a new hybrid from Lexus for 2022: the completely redesigned NX 350h. It produced 239 horsepower and outperformed its predecessor, but importantly, the new version also ran quieter and more refined. Its hybrid nature draws less attention, which is always a good thing. Fuel economy is excellent for a luxury compact SUV at 39 mpg. It also benefits from the same updates as the rest of the NX range, including an all-new interior with vastly improved technology. However, that’s not all.
