Suv Car Of The Year 2023 – The SUV of 2023 is here: change has come, TooOur criteria are the same, but the variety of players continues to grow.
As you know, the automotive industry is living through a period of transition from internal combustion engines to battery electric drives. We saw this 10 years ago when we named the Tesla Model S the 2013 Car of the Year, making us the first electric vehicle to take home the Golden Caliper trophy. Since then, Tesla has established itself as a dominant player not only in electric cars but also in the luxury vehicle market. Last year, the company sold more Model 3s than the Audi A4, BMW sold the 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz sold the C-Class combined. And over the past decade, it has boasted other electric cars, including the Chevrolet Bolt, Lucid Air and Rivian R1T. Today, we’re testing more electric vehicles than ever during our SUV of the Year review.
Suv Car Of The Year 2023
Electric movements are far from over. During the planning and execution of our 2023 SUV program, several industry developments occurred. In July, sales of new electric vehicles topped 5 percent of total US new car sales for the first time, widely seen as a tipping point for much-needed widespread adoption. In August, anti-inflation legislation was signed into law, including major incentives for the sale and production of electric vehicles. Later that month, on August 25, the California Air Resources Board issued landmark regulations to phase out internal combustion engines from new vehicles by 2035. The following month, Washington, Massachusetts, and New York followed suit with their own rules.

Although Tesla is still a major player in the industry, the automaker is facing increasing competition as other brands such as Mercedes, Cadillac, BMW and Audi introduce rival electric vehicles. As of early 2021, there are nearly 20 electric vehicle models on sale in the US; In 2022, this number has increased to more than 30. And that was evident at our SUV of the Year event, where we had 14 battery-electric models, seven plug-in hybrids and four hybrids – all new or significantly updated. And that doesn’t include the vehicles we invited that didn’t show up due to lack of availability or recalls, like the Volvo XC60 plug-in hybrid and the Subaru Solterra and Toyota bZ4X electric twins.
Like it or not, electrification is here to stay. Tesla CEO Elon Musk entered the auto industry as a disruptor, and for a while it felt like his company wasn’t being taken seriously by older automakers. Now, nearly every OEM has tried — and is still trying — to catch up, and some have even shared their plans for future all-electric lineups.
The SUVOTY 2023 competition featured a large number of high-performance vehicles. Over a week and a half, we tested, photographed, recorded and drove 45 SUVs on various surfaces. Honda’s proving grounds in Cantil, California once again served as the stage for our annual showdown, featuring off-road areas and twisty test tracks. As in previous years, we split the event into different stages, with our testing and photography team trying to pass each vehicle before the judges arrived. After all the judges drove each one, we selected the finalists, who we then drove on 27.6-miles of winding roads, railroad crossings, city streets and freeways around Tehachapi, California. The final stage consisted of a long debate and a final vote on the winner.
SUV of the Year is not an arbitrary decision, nor is it a direct comparative test. We evaluate each vehicle against our six key criteria, judging each candidate on its own merits in the following categories:
Volvo’s 2023 Electric Suv Will Use Lidar To Drive Itself
Design Advances: Exterior and interior quality and finish, materials, fit and finish, and even entry and exit are critically evaluated.
Technical Excellence: Here we evaluate the software and user experience to assess the behavior of the powertrain and chassis as well as the overall structural integrity of the vehicle.
Implementation of the intended function: We critique how appropriate it is for that market. A three-row family SUV must provide enough space and comfort for the entire family, for example.
Value: We consider each competitor’s unique performance, standard and available performance compared to the competitive set.

Safety: From advanced driver assistance systems to passive safety devices to government and industry crash assessments, safety is important to us all.
Performance: The rated mpg or electric range per battery volume in the model segment is the main concern of price and comfort for most buyers.
In fact, as society continues this transition to electrification, you can count on our coverage to highlight the pros and cons of the latest trends, as we do in this issue. We hope you like it.
