Suv That Can Hold 3 Car Seats – Parents often look for the holy grail of cars. It’s not a minivan, it’s a car with three child seats in the back seat. If you’re thinking about it, you’ve found answers in car upholstery diagnostics that include minivans.
Editors have been installing car seats in vehicles for over a decade to test fit and interior space. We’ve found cars, SUVs, vans and pickups that can fit three child seats comfortably and safely in the back of the vehicle.
Suv That Can Hold 3 Car Seats
As we find more trucks, vans, and SUVs that fit three child seats, we’ll add them to the list here. Currently there are child seat controls that allow 3 child seats in the second row:
Land Rover Defender 130 Has Eight Seats You Can Actually Use
To test the car seats, the front seats are adjusted to a comfortable position for a 6-foot-tall driver and a 5-foot-6-inch passenger. There are three child seats in the second row: a high-back car seat, a convertible car seat and a rear-facing child seat. We used Graco, Chicco and Britax car seats in our tests. Child seats are secured using locking hooks. Use a seat belt if the latches cannot be used due to difficulty or inaccessibility.
The booster seat is behind the driver’s seat and the child seat and convertible seat (front/back mode) are behind the passenger seat. In addition, we installed a booster seat in the middle seat of the second row and a convertible in the outer seat, and checked that the three car seats fit.
For safety, the child in the seat must be able to reach the seat belt buckle and all three seats must be at a right angle for safety. Avoid slipping. In some cases, our 3 car seats will most likely fit, and a narrower car seat may be a better fit. If you have a third row, install the seats and convertibles facing forward.

For many families, especially large families, a three-row SUV is a natural choice. Many offer an attractive combination of cargo space, passenger space, comfort and safety features. They have a size advantage over the average sedan, but how well they fit child seats is confusing.

We did a child seat check of the most popular vehicles in the segment to see which vehicles do well with child seats. Here is their ranking:
VW’s latest and greatest SUV has been added to our annual Honor Roll because it scored so highly in our car seat inspection. The Atlas gets a straight A thanks to easy-to-reach latch anchors and a roomy second and third row.
Redesigned for 2017, the midsize Acadia excels as a child seat, maximizing legroom in the second and third rows. We tested the three-row Acadia Denali with two-row captain’s seats, although two-row seats are also available.
The big, beefy Dodge Durango feels like SUV nostalgia, but it’s perfect for carrying kids or towing a boat or RV. The Durango’s second-row bench seats easily handled rear-facing child seats in our testing, but the third-row’s partially enclosed anchorage lost points.
Correcting Common Car Seat Mistakes
Honda’s largest SUV does well with child seats in all three rows, and with the bench seats, the Pilot’s wide, flat second row has enough room for three. Space, ease of locking, and an extra set of 3rd-row anchors all got high marks, but points were deducted for the 2nd- and 3rd-row floppy buckles, which made it difficult for kids to fasten their belts themselves.
With a powerful powertrain, plenty of room and a rugged exterior, the Ford Explorer SUV is a favorite of many families looking for third-row seating and the ability to tow a boat or camp if it’s decent. In the car seat review, we tested the 2017 Explorer XLT with a 7-seater.
The redesigned 2016 CX-9 SUV is much better than its predecessor in terms of safety seats. It has a tilt-and-slide second-row seat that allows parents to move into the third row even when a forward-facing child seat is installed. However, he lost a few points to the second row anchor latch.
Child seats of all sizes fit perfectly in the Santa Fe SUV, but the 2nd and 3rd row seat belts get in the way. These buckles sink into the seat cushion below, making it difficult for a child in a booster seat to put them on by themselves.

The Mitsubishi Outlander SUV may appeal to budget-conscious families looking for three rows of seats. In terms of child seats, the 7-seater Outlander is better up to the third seat. A hard-to-use 2nd row top yarn anchor and a buried 3rd row buckle lose points. Also, since there are no latches or anchors in the third row, the only child seats that can be changed are the seats.
Updated for 2017, the Pathfinder makes installing three car seats easier, but suffers from the same car seat penalties as the Santa Fe and Kia Sorento SUVs: floppy buckles in the second and third rows.
Chevrolet’s redesigned people mover has a roomy second row with an accessible anchor latch, but the 2018 Traverse loses points in the third row. Fixed headrests prevent the fit of a forward-facing convertible. I had a similar problem with the 3rd row booster seats. Also, the third row of floppy buckles is not kid friendly.
Like its Santa Fe cousin, the Sorento SUV has a lower overall car seat score due to the sagging seat belt buckles. It also takes a bit to connect to the second row’s bottom latch attachment points, but our car seats fit perfectly. Finally, there is no upper attachment for the 3rd row, so a forward-facing child seat cannot be securely fastened there.
Best Travel Car Seats
The SUV Toyota Highlander is at the bottom of the list, which gets only 0.5 points from the winner. You will lose points for 2nd and 3rd row floppy buckles and poor adjustment of the 3rd row seat in a forward-facing convertible. There is no anchor in the lower part of the 3rd row, so I had to use the seat belt to secure the car seat and position it in the middle. Seat belts hang from the ceiling and block the driver’s view during use.

I was sold on upgrading to a van, but D insisted that a 3rd row SUV would be a great choice for our family. After 10 months here I love my car. I love how it feels compact without sacrificing space. It’s functional and easy to go out with three kids. No joke, my monthly Costco haul was a success (with some creative storage arrangements). And as a family of 5 people and 2 dogs, we have made several trips with the car. Story
