Suv With Car Seat Tilt – Among the most important things we carry in our vehicles are our children and their car seats. For many families, especially large ones, a three-row SUV is a natural choice: many offer an attractive mix of cargo, passenger space, comfort and safety features. While they have a size advantage over the average sedan, how well they accommodate child seats is a mixed bag.
We conduct car seat tests on the most popular vehicles in the segment to find out which car seats handle the best. They are classified as:

VW’s latest and largest SUV scored so well in the car seat test that it made our annual honors list. The Atlas earned straight A’s thanks to easily accessible berths and roomy second and third rows. Bonus: It easily accommodated three car seats on the second-row bench.
What To Do When The Vehicle Seat Belts Aren’t Long Enough
Redesigned for 2017, the now-small midsize Acadia gets a big win in child seats, making the most of second- and third-row legroom. While it’s only available with two rows of seats, we tested a three-row Acadia Denali with second-row captain’s chairs.
Big and powerful, the Dodge Durango is once again an SUV, but it delivers when it comes to hauling kids and towing a boat or RV. The Durango’s second-row bench easily handled rear-facing car seats in our tests, but the third row’s partially covered tether anchors missed a point.
Honda’s largest SUV handles car seats well in all three rows, and there’s plenty of room for three in the Pilot’s wide, flat second row when the bench seat is equipped. While it gets high marks for roominess, ease of locking, and an extra set of third-row anchors, we lower marks for the flexible second- and third-row buckles, which make it difficult for kids to open.
With its capable powertrain, roomy cabin and rugged exterior, the Ford Explorer SUV has become popular with many families looking for a third row and the ability to tow boats or RVs when properly equipped. In our car seat testing, we tested the 2017 Explorer XLT, which seats seven.
How Do Car Seats Fit In A 2022 Lincoln Navigator?
Redesigned for 2016, the CX-9 SUV is bigger and faster than previous versions when it comes to car seats. It has a tilt-and-slide second row that allows parents to move into the third row even when a forward-facing car seat is installed. However, it loses some points for the second-row Latch anchors.
Car seats of all sizes fit well in the Santa Fe SUV, but what makes it difficult are the flexible belt buckles in the second and third rows. These buckles sink into the lower seat cushion, making it difficult for children wearing the booster to buckle up independently.
For families on a budget looking for three rows of seats, the Mitsubishi Outlander SUV may appeal. When it comes to child seats, the seven-passenger Outlander does well until you get into the third row. It lost points for difficult-to-use second-row high tether anchors and buried third-row buckles. Because the third row has no locking or anchorages, the only car seats that can be installed are behind the booster seats.
The Pathfinder has been updated for 2017 and made installing our trio of child seats easier, but it suffers the same car seat penalty as the Santa Fe and Kia Sorento SUVs: flex buckles in the second and third rows.
My Car Seat Won’t Move Forward Or Back [but It Moves Up And Down]
While Chevrolet’s redesigned passenger wagon has a roomy second row with locking anchors, the 2018 Traverse loses points for its third row. The fixed headrest intervened with the adjustment of the front converter; We had a similar problem with the third-row booster seat. Also, the third-row flex buckles aren’t very kid-friendly.
Like its Santa Fe cousin, the Sorento SUV suffers from inflexible seat belt buckles, which lowered its overall car seat score. It takes some muscle to engage the second-row lower anchors, but our car seats fit just fine. Finally, it doesn’t have a third-row top anchor, which means forward-facing car seats can’t be safely installed there.
At the bottom of the list is Toyota’s Highlander SUV, which earns only half of our winner’s points. It lost points for flexible buckles in the second- and third-row seats, as well as poor placement of the front third-row convertible. Because there are no lower anchors in the third row, we used the seat belt to secure the car seat and the only place the top anchor is located was to place it at the center point. Because the seat belt comes down from the roof, it blocks the driver’s view when in use.

Kia Sorento Phev Family Car Review
The Hyundai Palisade is available as a seven- or eight-seat family SUV. This seven-seat model has two second-row captain’s chairs with a walkway between them and third-row seating. The eight-seater Hyundai Palisade has three second-row seats, split 60:40. As long as you use ISOFix instead of a seat belt, the outboard seat tilts forward as the child seats are installed, giving you good space between the third row seats. Check out the full eight-seater Palisade review here.
The new 2021 Toyota Kluger seven-seat SUV ranges from $48,000 to $76,000. It fits three seats in the second row, and there are no front anchors in the third row. This new model has good third-row access for a child to climb into the third-row seats. Read the full review here.
The BMW X7 is a special SUV with seven seats. It has five top mounts and four ISOFix points and can hold five child seats… all this and you have access to the third row with child seats installed in the second row seats. The second row seats all slide forward and backward to adjust the distribution of legroom. The second-row outboard seat behind the front passenger has a mechanism that allows you to move the seat forward with a child seat attached (if you’re using the ISO Fix and not the seat belt), which provides a large step. The Kia Sorento PHEV is a seven-seat family SUV. There are no airbags in its third-row seats, so be aware of that.
As for the Kia Sorento’s third-row access, it’s actually pretty good. The second row seats are split 60:40 and the mechanism works well if you only use two child seats.
