An electric motor develops maximum power (spin) at a much lower rpm than its gas engine counterpart. Even when the vehicle is in petrol mode, the battery still has enough fluid for the electric vehicle to act as a booster, specifically a turbocharger. While the electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack are designed to improve mpgs, it still gets it to 60 mph in a second or two. Toyota’s RAV4 Prime (which it calls the PHEV version) takes 5.7 seconds, 2 seconds less than the RAV4 gas engine.

Drivers who want a bridge vehicle to an all-electric future should aim to complete daily driving tasks without burning the engine. This means that battery range should be a big part of the buying decision.

The 5 Best Hybrid Cars Of 2023
The battery-only version of the Clarity (discontinued last year) is a tough EV in terms of range, but the PHEV has a lot to offer, including 48 electric miles from a 17 kilowatt-hour battery pack. Combined with a 1.5-liter quad (which rarely starts the wheels), it produces 212 horsepower and the equivalent from zero to 60 times in 8.1 seconds. Owners praise comfort and ride quality, although the rear seat may be larger. $33,400 Clarity gets a full $7,500 credit.

RAV4 Prime gets a full $7,500 tax credit. The best-in-class XSE model ($41,675) offers many useful features, including 19-inch wheels, paddle shifters, and some safety gear. Improvements were also made to the $28,220 Prius Prime sedan, which currently has a 25-mile EV range. But it’s a poker beast with a 121 horsepower drivetrain. A $28,220 Prius Prime qualifies for a federal income tax credit of $4,502. If your store has an addon, make it Prime Prime RAV4.
Toyota produced the first hybrids available to Americans, and Ford made its American debut in 2004 with the Escape. They presented themselves as taxis on the empty streets of New York. The Escape PHEV ($34,755 with a $6,843 credit) uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor for a total of 221 horsepower. Electric range is 37 miles (530 miles total) with a 14.4 kilowatt-hour battery pack. There is no all-wheel drive version. It’s worth upgrading to the $38,000 SEL version, which also adds heated leather seats.
