“We’re facing a climate crisis and we need to reduce our dependence on fossil fuel cars,” says Catherine Garcia, Sierra Club Clean Transportation for All campaign manager.
Take Steve Bond, for example, who checked out some of the hybrids on display at the Washington, D.C. auto show last month. “I think it’s time to move from a gasoline straight to a hybrid model for higher mileage,” he said, explaining why he thought the hybrid Toyota Highlander would be his next vehicle.
He’s considering an electric vehicle, but says the lack of fast chargers for long-distance trips prevents him from buying one today.

Michelle Krebs, executive analyst at Cox Automotive, says these concerns are common. As a result, hybrids are much more popular with customers than fully electric vehicles.
“About 11% of new car buyers are looking at electric vehicles,” she says. “About 20% of all new car buyers buy hybrids.”

Toyota introduced another version of the Prius at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January 2000. The Toyota Prius, first introduced in Japan in 1997, was the world’s first mass-produced gasoline/electric hybrid vehicle.
But SUVs are outselling small cars across the market, including among hybrids. The Toyota RAV-4 hybrid crossover (41 mpg) and the Highlander SUV hybrid (36 mpg) far outpaced the Prius last year.
Kia, Hyundai and Honda offer hybrid SUVs in different sizes. And Toyota’s minivan, the Sienna, only comes as a hybrid (36 mpg).
Then there are pickup trucks. Ford sells a hybrid version of its F-150, and the popular Maverick — a smaller pickup truck designed to appeal to urban dwellers with a truck hitch — comes as a hybrid in its standard configuration. The Maverick gets about 42 miles per gallon.

And on the sporty side of the spectrum, Corvette introduced its first hybrid: the E-Ray. Fuel consumption is not high. But with an electric motor the size of a Folgers coffee sandwiched between the front wheels, it’s the fastest Corvette ever, capable of going from zero to 60 in 2.5 seconds.
There is currently a debate throughout the auto industry—among companies, advocates, and government regulators—about whether hybrids are helping or harming the current fight against climate change.
To state the obvious, a hybrid vehicle is better for the climate and people’s health than a gasoline guzzler.
But when they look to the future, climate advocates no longer stress the need to make gas cars more efficient. They want to reduce the number of trips made by car, investing in public transport and walkability.

And they want all new cars on the road to be zero-emission vehicles, which now means all-electric vehicles, powered by a greener electrical grid. Such a transition creates daunting challenges – from building vehicles to finding minerals for batteries.
Garcia, of the Sierra Club, says it’s essential to pull off the transition to zero emissions as soon as possible. Each year of delay reduces carbon emissions for years to come due to the vehicle’s longer life on the road.
“Every year we increase pollution from traffic,” she says. “The truth is that we should have crossed over 20 years ago.”
Advocates worry that all the money and engineering know-how invested in hybrids is not money and know-how going into pure electric vehicles, slowing the transition.

Although it has revolutionized hybrids, the Japanese automaker has long been skeptical of electric vehicles. As a result, it is far behind its competitors in the race to bring them to market.

He points out that hybrids are much cheaper than electric vehicles to produce and buy, and that they do not need a charger. A customer can buy a hybrid car instead of a traditional gas vehicle without changing their driving behavior, making it easier to sell.
But even if all drivers were fully prepared to switch to electric vehicles, Toyota argues that hybrids would still make sense. Because their batteries are much smaller, the company can build many more hybrids than EVs from the same battery sources.
The debate about hybrids is not hypothetical. Regulators must decide whether their policies should focus on switching to electric vehicles as quickly as possible or on encouraging hybrids with their higher fuel consumption.
And in Europe, California and some other states, policymakers have taken a more radical stance, essentially mandating that all new cars be zero-emissions by 2035. There may be room for plug-in hybrids, but that wouldn’t allow traditional hybrids, which require gasoline.
